Tutorial Day 1 I started my week of CAST 2018 with a Tutorial with Anne-Marie Charrett as she taught us about being a coach and what it looks like to coach those around us. Specifically she was teaching about coaching testers but it was more than just that. We spent the day talking about coaching, which is a lot like teaching but really a one-on-one experince. We did talk a little about coaching in a group setting, but most of it was doing individual coaching.

Selenium Conference 2017 -Austin
Continuing into the World of learning new things Back in my developer days I checked out Selenium, but from what I learned at the conference, that was back in their infant days. From what I saw at the conference Selenium has come a long way and it has only just begun.
Pre-Conference Workshop I was lucky enough to be able to attend a pre-conference workshop on getting started with Selenium. Some basic stuff was covered but it was a real good overview and very helpful on getting started with Selenium.

Location, Location, Location For those of you who don’t know Miami University is about 1 hour north of Cincinnati, OH - not in Florida like some may think. So now that we have established where Miami is and where I work for that matter, when I tell you that the QA or The Highway Conference is located in Columbus, OH, which according to Distance Between Cities its only 118 miles by car, which is like a nice day trip.

Acceptance Criteria
Last week I asked questions about Definition of Done, one item that should probably be part of every DoD is Acceptance Criteria.
Last week I left a lot of question with no answers, this week, I’m going to provide a few thoughts along with my questions.

30 Days of Testability
I’ve never tried this but I’m thinking I might atleast try a few of these. Check out the 30 Days of Testabilty Challenge at the Ministry of Testing. They are challenging anyone(testers, developers, managers, whomever) around the world to complete 30 challenges in 30 days related to testing.
They have done this before, I’ve only ever been able to do one of two of the challenges, and never during the actual month of the challlenge, but maybe I can get a few of these done this month, and see where I stand at the end of the month.

Definition of Ready
As we were talking about the Definition of Done, it got some conversations going to talk about the Definition of Ready.
Does your team have a definition of ready for your stories?
What do you include in your definition?
Acceptance Criteria?Test Cases?
Has your team looked into creating a Definition of Ready?
Do you use this DoR as a guideline to know when a story is ready to be worked on?

Test Cases
One possible outcome of spending time gathering Acceptance Criteria for stories is that you have now collected information that can be easily used as test cases.
How else do you go about gathering test cases?
Some things to think about when writing test cases:
Test Cases need to be simple and transparent
Test Cases can & should be written by everyone(different people provide different perspective)
Tests should be able to be rerun and always produce the same results

Definition of Done
When do I consider things done?
Does everyone on my team know what it means for something to be considered done? Do we have a Team Definition of Done? Do we always follow the DoD? Do I speak up if I don’t think everything is really done? Do we see value in our DoD? Are there additional things that we can do to improve the quality of what we deliver?

Counterstrings created in Alfred Workflow
While attending the CAST 2018 I learned about the idea of a Counter String. Counter strings are self documenting strings with respect to their length.
James Bach, describes counter strings as follows:
“A counterstring is a graduated string of arbitrary length. No matter where you are in the string, you always know the character position. This comes in handy when you are pasting huge strings into fields and they get truncated at a certain point.

Starting Small but remember it will go bigger I’m just starting to learn how to write and run some tests so lets just run them on my computer. I don’t need a big hub and several nodes to run hundreds of tests at a time lets just begin running one test at a time. So I want to start my automated testing adventure by verifying that a form launches correctly.

Since there is just one of you, you should just automate everything A few days after I started this position last year, this was something that I heard regularly from my upper-management.
You should start testing “X” we get lots of updates for that so you should automate the tests for that.
This is coming from people who have never tested anything, and definately have no clue what it means to create automated tests.

I arrived in Orlando, last night to spend the next 6 days learning about testing and what my job means. I get to learn from others, see what they are doing and just get a better overall understanding of how to bring a department of developers up to the place where they can test.

Now this wasn’t a one day affair, I mean I probably took several days googing things and going down rabbit holes and rabbit holes until I started to find sites that were useful and provided me with some information that was useful.

Where to start As my new job begins, I wonder how this job will be different then my life as a developer. I have been a developer for as long as I know.
Developer @ Miami University for 15 years. This will be a big adjustment, instead of creating code, I now get to discover the bugs in the code. Atleast I know good places to look. I look forward to the automation I am able to help create the build and deployment.
